from Lisa/Germany - SHE'S COMING TO FINLAND JULY 26TH-AUGUST 3RD!!!! :DD
I can't even remember how many times we've talked about her trip via FB chat! :)
Definitely meeting her up! :)

from Emma
Envelope was decorated with Tangled pictures and she sent me a Rapunzel greeting card. I couldn't be happier!! :3
Friday

2nd letter from Germany
still very short (and she has rather big handwriting) and rather shallow :/

Another 2nd letter from Germany
still typed. WHY? Haven't even seen her handwriting and she hasn't told me if there's a reason she types the letters :/

No, olipas avautuminen näin viikonlopun kunniaksi. :D

Onneksi muuten on ihania kirjekamuja! Tsemppiä!

    3. Tuli vaan kertaalleen :)

  4. That cat card from Russia is so cute :) I like it.
And all that Tangled/Rapunzel things...I wonder if we have such things here too...they look really great...
Haven't noticed anything like that yet though....maybe I gotta check next time...

(Sometimes I kinda feel I'm the only one writing in English...:P )

    1. I loved it from the first moment I saw it >3< The woman I swapped with wanted one Moomin card and offered me a huge list of cards.. That was one of the first ones I saw and I just told her right away that I had to get that :D And now it's in my postcard album :3
I didn't even know that we actually have Tangled/Rapunzel cards or anything in Finland.. Sure there's this one 3D card with Aurora, Rapunzel, Belle and Snow White but JUST Rapunzel.. I had to order my own Tangled postcards via ebay from Singapore! Same with Frozen cards.. Let's just hope that Frozen would be such a big hit that Elsa or/and Anna cards would start appearing in stores<3

Sometimes you are :DD But I like getting comments in English as well :D

    2. That's cool then that you got that card :) There are really nice cards all over the world..

Ah, ok, I thought that maybe in Finland they'd sell such cards too... Maybe i should start ordering cards online too...but it feels like it could take a long time for those to arrive, or maybe they'd never arrive...but it looks like you don't have problems with the cards not arriving...

Yeah...postcards of Elsa and Anna would be great too...I've seen pictures of that movie and they look really cool :)

Ok :) And I like trying to read Finnish comments...:P Maybe one day I'll be able to write comments in Finnish too..but right now I'm still too scared to do that publicly...and I spend a long time trying to think about the right expression or the right way to say it...worried about saying something wrong...

    3. There are! :) Just today I received another card I really wanted - Pikachu with Totoro<3 :) Luckily people really do love Moomins :DD

I'd recommend to look for actual postcard sets from ebay :) Some are "expensive" (like $9-20 with postage for 5-10 postcards), for example the Tangled and Frozen ones were nearly $9 for set (set of 6 cards).. But I found some other Disney princess or just black and white cards of movie stars with less than $5 - for 28 postcards! :) It's worth checking :) And I think that some Finnish postcard stores like Postcardgarden and Perromania even ship abroad and their postcard selection is usually great :)
So far I've gotten everything I ordered and 99% of the times something doesn't arrive or has suffered during the mailing the seller returns at least part of the money you paid, sometimes all of it :)

The movie is adorable and everyone I know is freaking over it! It's the best Disney movie and so on.. I might be the only one who still prefers Tangled over every other Disney movie :DD

How long does it usually take from you to read the Finnish comments? :D I think in some parts there's spoken Finnish used 'cause at least I find it hard to write written Finnish all the time :DD
I'll be waiting to get a Finnish comment from you ;)

      Delete
    4. Cool, are you going to post a picture of that Pikachu card too? :)

Ok, yeah, maybe I'm going to try ebay then too..let's see. Never ordered postcards online though so far...
And sometimes single postcards in stores here can be totally expensive...if I find postcard sets here of 5 or 10 cards, those are often cheaper. :) But there aren't that many of those...

Gotta really watch that Frozen movie one day too then... Got an Aku Ankka mag today (issue 2) and it mentions some book about the Frozen movie, I think.."Lue uutuusleffan huikea tarina!" and "Nyt elokuvateattereissa 3D:nä"...the book cover looks really nice..but it's expensive unfortunately..(on adlibris the books seems to be cheaper though)
      http://www.adlibris.com/fi/product.aspx?isbn=9513238687

How long it takes me to read Finnish comments...? Hmm..it varies, I guess. Depends on what is written in the comment...
I keep saying that with things in Finnish it depends on whether the people use words I know...:P like "Look: The people who wrote the book/comic are so nice: They've actually used words I know already :) :p"
When the comment is short and has lots of familiar words, then I can maybe read it in a few minutes...but when I have to look up almost every word...then it takes me a long time :(
It also depends on how complicated the sentence structure is...how difficult the words are, like how different they are from the "original" word... With some words it is really hard to figure out what word is behind it...how the word is like that can be found in the dictionary...
Other words that barely get changed are easy to understand...
I really had problems for example understanding that sentence from an Aku Ankka story: "Talven suuri juhla lähestyy, ja leppeä joulumieli kietoutuu lämmittävän huovan lailla kaikkien ankkalinnalaisten harteille..."
Well, the first 4 words were easy...but the rest, :P was hard...

Spoken Finnish...well, it also depends...when it's only the last letter missing...like "ny" instead of "nyt"...then spoken Finnish is also not that much of a problem...
And "tykkään" I've already learned too...:P

It feels weird thinking like that...but I sometimes can't help thinking that if a comment on your blog is written in Finnish, that then it's not meant for a non-Finn to read...stupid I know, since the comments are public...

Hessu/Goofy is always talking spoken Finnish too in the comics...

Ok..maybe one day I'll try and write a Finnish comment...but it probably won't be as long as my comments in English...

    5. Pikachu card has been posted already :D But yeah.. I just post everything after the whole mail week is over even if I only get one postcard on Monday and nothing for the rest of the week ^^

Finland doesn't have that many postcard sets in stores either.. I think I found one Kaj Stenvall's duck card set for 3-5€ (10 cards) back in 2010 but that's about it :) After that I haven't seen those around.. The only ones I know of are Moomin recipe cards that are sold online :) Or in better stores located in bigger cities :D

Aww :3 That Frozen book looks pretty :D But is rather expensive.. Can't buy that even if I'd want to as my German course book might be 40€ (like my Russian and Swedish books were X__X). But I'd love to also get "The Art of Frozen" :) My best friend got it for herself and it looks AMAZING http://www.amazon.co.uk/Art-Frozen-Charles-Solomon/dp/1452117160/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1390210323&sr=8-1&keywords=art+of+frozen :D There's also "The Art of Tangled" that I've been drooling over :D The moment I have more time and money I'm definitely going to buy that! :D

Did you in the end still managed to translate and understan "Talven suuri juhla lähestyy, ja leppeä joulumieli kietoutuu lämmittävän huovan lailla kaikkien ankkalinnalaisten harteille..." ? :D I've always hated translating sentences like that (we have some similar ones on Christmas cards) :D

Haha :D Let me know if I can help you with spoken Finnish :) I'd love to be of help! :) And I know what you mean :) Whenever I see comments ANYWHERE in the Internet written in a language I can't speak I feel as if it's not for foreigners.. But it's just easier to write in your native language I guess :D

    6. Yeah :) One never knows if something is going to come on the last mail day of the week, so you never know if maybe you're waiting in vain or not...:P

Yeah...and often if they have card sets, it's not postcards, but greeting cards (folded cards) here... But I've seen a few postcard sets too..but not really of a certain person or a certain kind of cards...more like sets of winter or christmas cards (or easter cards or whatever time of the year it is)

I'm kinda thinking about getting it, if I can find it somewhere and it isn't too expensive...maybe I should wait if one day I get to go to Finland...then I wouldn't have to pay shipping cost for it...shipping makes the books even more expensive than they already are...

Those course books can be really expensive, yeah...I paid around the same for my Finnish course books (and since I've bought like 3 or 4 books so far, it does add up...:( )

The book "The Art of Frozen" looks cool too :)

Hm...Translating that sentence...I didn't really manage....but I think I more or less understood what it means, I hope so at least... But I think there were some untranslatable words in it...
Maybe it means something like "and a sweet/soft christmas mood intertwines (maybe also "connects" in a way...but not sure) warm (or hot/heating) blankets for the shoulders of everybody at Ankkalinna"...
No idea if that's correct though...and I can't seem to find a good translation for "lailla" (it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the word "laki" (law) in that context...

      Ok...I will :) Thanks.

Oh good...:) Then it's not only me thinking like that :P and yeah, usually it is easier to write in your native language...even though sometimes I've noticed already that some things are easier to say in English than in German...especially when you're playing or doing something in English and then have to come up with a good translation for newly created words...
But most things are probably easier to write in your native language...

    7. By the end of Spring I'm most likely just waiting in vain as it seems like I'll be extremely busy with no time for anything else but school and sleep :S

In my case I don't really mind if I receive greeting cards, I think those are just as great as postcards but I hate the fact that so many people say that they don't want ANY greeting cards ever.. And have really strict rules on what to send to them.. It's not nice :( Sending postcards should be fun and I'd be happy to send cards that I like but everyone seems to like city views or some rare cards that I have to hunt for days :(

I hope you can get it :) I doubt it'll be sold out soon as Frozen doesn't seem to be as BIG as it was in USA even though it is loved :)
My German book is the third course book I buy for the school (we were given laptops to reduce the handout papers and so that we wouldn't need to buy books -__-) so I'm not pleased but I can't study without the book..

"Lailla" umm.. I'd say it's similar to "kuin" ("like a", "as"..).. Had to think about it for a while :DD My only Finnish for the last week has been zombie mumbling and ranting/raging about stupid things to my BFF :DD I like to sleep when I'd need to be a bit more productive :D
I'd translate "Talven suuri juhla lähestyy, ja leppeä joulumieli kietoutuu lämmittävän huovan lailla kaikkien ankkalinnalaisten harteille..." as "The big(gest) holiday of the winter approaches, and the tender/warm/cosy Christmas spirit interwines like a warming blanket to the shoulders of everyone in Ankkalinna" :D To be honest I hate trying to translate complicated sentences :'D

In my case it depends on my day.. Now and then it's easier to write in Finnish while at times I prefer English and trying to write in Finnish on days like those makes me look like a foreigner trying to learn Finnish instead of being a native.. :)

      Delete
    8. Who knows...maybe you'll get some cards or letters anyway...even if maybe you didn't send out any...

Yeah..I'm glad you don't mind greeting cards :) And sometimes I've also asked other people if greeting cards would be fine too and they said yes...
But some (or many), like you said, don't want any greeting cards. And sometimes I'd have some nice greeting cards to send that even would match their wishes, but if they don't want that...what can you do...
And with postcrossing, some there even say that on postcrossing you're supposed to send postcards, and no other cards...so there I'm not sure also if maybe sending a greeting card would be against the rules or so...

Thanks...yeah, I hope so too :) Probably I won't get it this month though...and I don't know if the store I usually buy from can even get that book..but I'll see...

You got laptops from school? Cool...I think here you still need to get books, not sure though...maybe there are places already too where you don't need to buy that many books...
I still kinda prefer books though, I like having an actual book in my hand...even though those can be so expensive...

Kiitos :) "Lailla" was one of the words I was completely lost with...:P
And I had to look up the words "leppeä", kietoutuu, huovan/huopa, harteille/hartia, joulumieli..but even after looking up all those words (and then also looking up kaikkien and lämmittävän, even though I knew those), it was still hard for me to turn it into a sentence that made sense...
Had to use my imagination :P
Looks like my translation at least wasn't completely wrong then...but it took me like an eternity to get to that point...:(

I hate complicated translations sometimes too...especially when they almost drive me crazy...Then it makes me feel like my teacher was right and I shouldn't try to read such things yet...:(

I barely write German online at all...since most of my (online) friends don't really know German...so I usually write English or Spanish...
So I guess the few times I actually write German, it can sometimes feel weird too...

      Delete
    9. I doubt that as people are mostly waiting to hear from me.. The only letters and postcard I might receive will probably be "Are we still writing?"/"Did my last letter get lost?" kinda notes/postcards :D And I just get even more depressed when I get those and am drowning in school work at the same time :D

I don't see sending greeting cards as going against the rules if the card fits the receiver's wishlist.. For example I sent a bunch of fairy greeting cards a couple of years ago and those were loved and I also received one myself :) It's just that when there are some people who HAVE to live exactly by the rules you better not send them greeting cards even if it would fit their likes PERFECTLY :)

In a way I understand that people prefer school books, but I like it like this :) No extra papers (unless if you want to print out the PDF/word files and mostly no need to purchase expensive school books that range from 40 to 150€.. No idea what the German bok will cost as the teacher apparently orders it from Germany :S "DaF kompakt A1 - B1"

Well that is rather hard to translate.. I'd throw the paper away if I'd have to try to translate similar sentence from any other language to Finnish :D So I'd say you did better than I would have :D

My friends are already excited that I've had two German courses and can write SOME German (like the VERY basics) and already send me some questions and sentences in German :D I'm not THAT good or naturally talented in German but I do understand how the basic grammar goes with mixing Finnish, English and Swedish words and grammar :D I should have taken German right away instead of Russian!! :D

      Delete
    10. Aww..yeah...getting such cards or letters makes me feel guilty sometimes too...but on the other hand it's also nice when people think about you and don't just forget about you when you don't write for some time...

Yeah..once I was looking for Sheepworld cards as someone from postcrossing wanted those cards, but all I could find were folded cards, so I asked the person if folded cards were fine and she said yes :) So I mailed out that card. Later I discovered postcards too...but since then I haven't come across people anymore that asked for Sheepworld cards...

But yeah..with some people it says in their profiles "No greeting cards/folded cards"...and then sometimes I can't find a perfect card for them as a postcard..only as folded cards...so they get something that doesn't fit their wishes as good as that greeting card...

Thanks :) Maybe it's practice that makes it easier for me to translate..since I've done plenty of translations already...

That's cool :) Maybe I'll write you something in German then too :)
Russian may be interesting to learn too though..at least I'm kinda thinking about it learning one day too...but the alphabet is maybe not that easy...

  5. Those last two letters (under Friday)..are those from people from letternet? Or did you find them elsewhere? (maybe you mentioned that already..but not sure)

And as for letternet...I think I'll kinda miss it...I don't want it to close...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yup, those came via Letternet..
I accepted all requests before it shut down and unfortunately that meant that I received some really shallow letters with next to no text.. "My name is, I'm XX years old, I'm from, I like" and that's it.. No questions or anything to start a real conversation on :(

I'm also going to miss Letternet since I did find some of my closest and dearest pals from there<3 :) RIP Letternet<3

      Delete
    2. Receiving such shallow letters is not nice...:( Too bad the letters are like that then...wonder if they'll change...or if they'll stay like that...
Not sure what's worse...shallow letters...or no reply at all.
Some people at letternet accepted my request, but when I wrote them, they didn't even reply...at least not yet...and with some it's been over a year already...(which I noticed when I wrote down the addys...)

Yeah...:( and some of the people I would have loved to get to know never even accepted my requests...now there won't be a chance anymore for them to accept them...

      Delete
    3. Those shallow letters are (in my opinion) the hardest to reply to... I kinda tried to explain that in your other blog (in "things that annoy me in penpalling") but sometimes I'm not that good at explaining :P
I have some of those letters too... and right now trying to think about what to reply to those letters...with not a single question in it, I don't even know how to start writing the letter..
Short letter that I got, less than 1 page (written on both sides), huge handwriting and it doesn't say very much...

      Delete
    4. The shallow ones ARE hard to reply to D: I was surprised as the latest first letter from Letternet (she got my address a couple of days before the place shut down) sent me a 4 pages long (A4) letter!! I was really taken aback and already sent her an email apologising for needing to take a while to reply but really really loved her letter :D Can't wait to start writing it sooner or later :D
But I still give one or two chances for the shallow letter writers, after that it's goodbye.. Especially with stamps being 1€ now.. I want to write letters so that spending one euro or more to send letter/package is a pleasure, not so that I think "Well, that's one euro wasted.."

I hated when people didn't accept requests in Letternet :( I found this really nice German girl I would have wanted to know when I joined but nothing :( She didn't accept it and I gave up looking.. All of my German penpals via Letternet sent me the requests..

      Delete
    5. Yeah..they are really hard to reply to...
That's cool that you got a long letter as a first letter :)
So that person gave you an e-mail addy already? I kinda wish I'd have asked some people for their e-mail addy too...but now it is too late for that...

Maybe those shallow-letter writers will stop writing by themselves..at least that one person who wrote shallow letters to me hasn't written in like almost a year (if I remember correctly)
And that person was one of the few people who sent me a letternet request...shortly after I joined...

Yeah...there were some people I was really interested too in getting to know them..some of those I contacted like over a year ago, and they never even reacted. I was hoping that with the notice of letternet closing, that then some people would accept my request, but that didn't happen...

I've barely gotten any request from penpals at letternet, I sent most of the requests out myself, and after I've gotten the notice that letternet would close, I sent requests to as many people as possible, hoping someone would accept, but only a few people did...(and one of them already deleted me again just a few days after accepting..., before I got to save her addy elsewhere...)

      Delete
    6. Yeah, she sent me a small note with the letter that had her email address and asked me to send her an email the moment I get her letter :) It was really nice and I have a feeling I could really get along with her, especially since lately I've grown distant with some of my pals and I've been thinking of reducing the number of people I write with.. All short&shallow writes and maybe some people with whom I don't enjoy writing no matter how long their letters would be :/

I really hope that those shallow writers would stop writing by themselves.. Would be a lot easier for me..

Seriously? D: That's too bad.. But did you get any new penpals before the site closed down for good?

      Delete
    7. That's cool if you have a feeling you could get along with her :) Hopefully it will be like that then too :)

Yeah..would be a lot easier if the people stopped writing by themselves, but I guess it depends on how the people are...some people probably don't have any problems to stop writing, others may try to continue writing after all...

Yeah...a few people accepted my request before it closed down, but compared to the amount of requests I sent out, hardly anybody accepted...:( and now I have to find another place to maybe find some more penfriends...
I wonder how those people are that accepted...if I'll get along with them...or not...

    8. I think you could try Penpal of the Weel :) Send an addy there or go through the ones there are already :D Loads of nice people!! :)
