Anyone else planning on hoarding stamps?

Or stopping postcrossing and probably writing letters to only a couple of people at a time?
Itella, the Finnish post office just published news that the postage is going to rise by 15 cents on January 1st 2014. From 85 cents to 1€ ($1,36) per stamp.

And the reason?

"Most people use approximately 30€ for stamps and postage a year so the rise will only be 2-3€"

Yeah.. NOT for penpallers or postcrossers...

and on TOP OF THIS they are going on a strike?
Fuck you. Fuck you Itella.

I was planning on NOT to hoard stamps next month but if I can save 15 cents a stamp I apparently really need to do that.. And I'm definitely quitting postcrossing and if the postage prices are going to get even more pricey I really need to drop penpals..

  1. Mitäs H-E-L-V-E-T-T-I-Ä ?!

Tää on ihan uskomatonta...

Argh. Just nythän ei ois tarvetta käyttää rahaa johki muuhunki...

    1. Joo..

  5. They're going to raise postage by 15 cents? That's crazy...and I thought here that a raise of 3 cents (last year) was a lot already...but that much raise from one year to another...wow

Hoarding stamps, how I wish we could do that here as well when prices go up...but unfortunately that isn't possible here...
That really sucks for people who sent lots of mail...
Those that maybe only send out some cards for christmas or birthdays, probably won't care that much about it...

    1. YEP. It'll be a total of 20 cent raise in just half a year! First 80 to 85 cents in June and now to 1€ in January :/ And just like that! First the raises were just 5 cents as that's the smallest Euro coin we "luckily" have in Finland and the BOOM 15 cents when the post doesn't even seem to work at some parts of Finland. WHY?? Sure they keep on telling how the letters and postcards aren't popular anymore but how can it be that they apparently don't even make money while Finland is in the Top5-10 of most active postcrossers in the world and there's over 500 postcards sent a day! Plus the active penpallers and such. Is it really so bad that they have to raise it so much at once? :/
I heard that Germany plans 2-3 cent raise a year.. That sounds like a dream compared to this bomb we got :(

At least we have the possibility to hoard stamps before we need to pay euro to just send a postcard! (Plus the 1,2-4€ the postcards tend to cost D:) I really hope this would just be some sort of April Fool's joke that leaked out at wrong time or a bad nightmare I'd wake up from asap :(

    2. They should offer some discount or something for people who buy lots of stamps, like I dunno, get 10 percent off when buying a certain amount of stamps, or get some free stamps after you've bought a bunch of stamps...so that people who buy lots of stamps don't suffer that much from the raise in postage...
But I kinda doubt that'll happen...

And yeah, on top of that there are strikes or long delivery times or even days without mail (at least in Germany here recently)
So they save on the salaries for their employees (dunno if that is like that in Finland, but they wouldn't go an strike if everything were perfect with salaries and working conditions) by not paying a lot or simply not hiring enough people...and at the same time they keep on raising the postage.
If at least that would improve the postal service/delivery...

Yeah..those 15 cents seems like the raise in postage for the next (at least) 5 years or so...
Not sure what I would do if they'd do that here as well...such a huge raise.
I wonder if that will also affect Finnish online stores shipping to other countries...if their shipping costs will go up as well then...

      Delete
    3. Definitely!! I spend hundreds of euros on postage a year (now that Postcrossing is still in the picture) so a little discount would be in order here and there.. Sure, you get like a euro or two off when you buy those 100 stamp sets that only have 3 different stamps but who can afford to pay nearly 100€ at once if you don't have a job or proper income?? D: And no, Itella will definitely not make it easier or less painful for their clients.. Luckily there's a little bit of talk about fighting back in the "Postcrossing Finland" group in Facebook :)

Right now no one knows which parts of Finland are on strike and which aren't.. I've read that some people don't get their mail or have gotten it in a week or two while our postal lady still seems to work - mum and dad are going to have a huge pile of bills waiting for them when they come home :) But yeah.. Right now there's some sort of strike going on and the whole postal service will be on strike on week 50.. And they have the balls to leak that news to public. So I don't see why there's a raise in prices again if the service and delivery is this crappy.

I'm afraid the postage will be 2€ in about 5 years time.. If in Germany it's around 1€ I'm definitely starting to learn the language and moving there!! -__- 5 cents I understand since it's the lowest raise we can do in here but 15 cents all of a sudden????
It can happen :/ One reason why I order stuff (or at least try to order) from stores that offer free shipping after you've used certain amount.. I hate when everything gets just more and more expensive :(

      Delete
    4. They should really make some discount or offer then for loyal customer, like recordshop x maybe who has a customer card, and when you've shopped with them 10 times for 17 euros, you get 17 euros free, lol.
That they should do at the post office then, with some affordable sum maybe, not 100 euros, that is too much at once. But maybe 20 or 30 euros, dunno...

In which way could they fight back at the postcrossing group? Buy stamps now....or send letters to the post office complaining? or in which way?

Yeah..that really sucks about those strikes happening or not happening...they should at least deliver mail more or less regularly..
Yesterday we waited in vain for mail once again, didn't even see a post office car anywhere, so I kinda think they again didn't bring us mail yesterday...(could be that they had nothing for us..but I doubt that...)

LOL, yeah..maybe move here then if the postage keeps going up...or maybe some other country..no idea about the postage prices in other countries...

Yeah...free shipping would be great...but unfortunately from those online stores I use amazon.de is the only one to offer free shipping.
Recordshop x wants 2,90 euros for shipping (CDs and DVDs)...which is ok, since it's not that much :)
But suomikauppa.fi often asks for so much shipping that it's like double or more of the item you buy...
like with the weekly Aku Ankka mag...the mag itself costs 3,90 euros...(which is already more than the magazine costs...at least the mag says 2,90...)
And for shipping they want like 8 (!) euros...that is crazy...
But there is no other alternative to get those things I want...I haven't found other online stores yet that ship the same things...
Most Finnish online stores don't ship to Germany...so it's either take it or leave it, pay that high shipping cost or don't get the item at all, lol. :(

    5. Yeah, they SHOULD offer some discounts but I doubt that’ll ever happen.. It’s Itella we’re talking about after all :(
I think 30-40€ should be okay price after which they would offer some discount or some sort of thing that after you’ve spent 100 or so euros you could get like 10€ discount or something.. :( But no..
We have a petition online and they started sending the link via Postcrossing Finland.. It probably doesn’t have any effect but at least it could make Itella realize that people actually do send mail and they aren’t going to get any more money by changing the price every 6 months or so, instead after this 15 cent raise they might actually make a bit less money as some Postcrossers (like me) are quitting while others only send a card or two a week.. Sure, 30-50 year old people with jobs and proper income have no problems with paying the extra 15 cents but what about students or people who don’t make that much? I didn’t even make 1000€ a month when I was working!! And I got practically the same frigging salary as everyone else! D:
The only good thing is that the strike won’t happen after all as they resolved the problem today (thank GOD for that!!)
I don’t really understand how the mail in Germany works if now and then they can just choose not to appear D: I hope you got mail today or get a huge pile on Monday! Do you still have mail delivered on Saturdays?
Our mail lady only chose not to appear on Wednesday but otherwise she came on time this week.. Luckily, as I wouldn’t have been as patient as some had to be, waiting for the whole week’s worth of mail to be delivered on Friday!
Well, at least in Estonia they have had the euro as a price of stamp within Europe for a year and a half.. And 1,2€ for countries outside of Europe so I doubt I’d move there even if their restaurants are cheap and the tea is a lot better and cheaper ;) I should move to Germany, near the border of Belgium or Netherlands so that I could drive to one of those countries to stock on Pickwick tea!! :’)
Ouch! :( I hate it when stores have rather high postage.. Especially Janetstore.. Damn that site for having amazing letter papers and stickers :(
Suomikauppa.fi? I’ve never even heard about it!! :( But it’s true that it’s really expensive to buy anything from other countries, even if it’s within Europe.. If it wouldn’t be so expensive I’d order Pickwick tea online ;;__;; But it’s 3€ per package and I think it was nearly 5€ of postage per tea package to Finland.. Can’t remember the site anymore as it was so expensive and I lost all hope :(
8€?!?!? And that would be weekly?? So you’d pay over 10€ a week to get Aku Ankka mag??? D:
What have you mostly been looking from Finnish online stores?

      Delete
    6. Yeah, stores often give discounts...but state-owned businesses (if Finnish mail is owned by the state..but probably it is) or any business or company in the public sector..they hardly ever give discounts...I think (i hope I made myself clear, lol...probably my explanation isn't very good...)

Good luck with the petition then...maybe it'll have some effect after all...not sure if it will though...
Yeah..I think even for people with a proper income such a high raise of postage might be too much...after all there's other things you need to buy as well...not just stamps and letter supplies... and there are also bills to pay.
Unless the people are really rich, then it's probably nothing to them...

I'm not sure how the mail here works either...but I think they simply haven't hired enough employees..and then when somebody gets sick, they don't have a replacement. But no idea about how that works...
Mail came today ..but the things I was waiting for didn't come :( maybe tomorrow..
And yeah, we still get mail on saturdays...at least in theory...lol. Right now it seems that we get mail on saturdays like every second week...so you never know if you're waiting in vain on saturday...or not...

That kinda makes me feel bad about our postage being cheaper (still, lol)...they keep raising ours too as well..so who knows how long it'll be cheaper still...

Yeah..that pickwick tea..I don't think I've ever seen it here in Germany...lol..so you probably won't be able to get it here...

Yeah..my mom also said that sometimes the postage is a lot higher than the actual item you buy, lol.
I think someone once mentioned suomikauppa to me...don't remember who though...but it's a store that sells and ships Finnish products to all over the world...and I think it's the only online store that does that...
But with the prices they have..I doubt that anybody who lives in Finland would actually order from there...cause it's probably way cheaper to get it elsewhere...
      Especially the magazines, lol.

Yeah, if you'd want to buy Aku Ankka each week, you'd have to pay that high postage each week then...:( So I try to limit myself to "special" issues of it...
      Tuote
      1 x Aku Ankka - Uusin numero
      Välisumma: 3,92€
      Toimituskulut: 8,16€
      Loppusumma: 12,08€

So I'm happy if at times a Finnish friend offers to get the magazine for me...

I've been mostly ordering Finnish movies, Finnish music (that isn't available in Germany, like Jenni Vartiainen, Anna Eriksson, Anna Puu, Chisu, Indica and many more, lol) and sometimes books (but those are so expensive :( )
And now recently I started to look for magazines, especially Aku Ankka...

Sure I know that shipping isn't only the postage..but still

    8. As you see the message came through! :) I just wasn’t checking blogger for nearly a day (all my mail posts are scheduled, and 95% of the other ones are too) so I didn’t have the time to accept it – needed to clean up and get my parents from the airport and catch up with them :)

Yup, Itella is 100% state owned so.. :/ Bet they won’t offer any kind of discounts and it really seems that Itella tries to get rid of traditional mail and just focus on packages :( If the prices rise and even fewer people buy stamps the prices will rise ALL the time :(
But the rise of prices isn’t a problem for people with proper income and families (or children that have already moved away), or at least that’s what it sounds and seems like in the groups as people keep saying how it’s a shame but it won’t change anything “my children’s hobbies cost more than my Postcrossing so I’ll keep Postcrossing even when the stamps cost 2€!”.. And it seems like the only ones really complaining are students and people with low income :(

That really sucks!! :( In Finland I think they usually have people to replace the ones who are sick – at least I haven’t had problems that mail wouldn’t have come for several days in a row.. Now and then we might not get any mail but it’s really rare and lasts only for one day :) Luckily..

And I hope you’ll get what you were waiting for!! I think I start waiting for my orders starting from Wednesday!! And I pray to every God there is that the presents will come in time ;) Otherwise I’m screwed :D In a way I’m jealous of the fact that you get mail 6 days a week but on the other hand in Finland the “long” weekend means you can get a pile of mail on Monday, in a way 3 days’ worth of mail :)

Don’t feel too bad :) Germany is a cheaper country than Finland even though we have the same currency.. My parents even asked me to bring some alcohol from Germany when I visited Berlin just because it’s cheaper! :) It was heaven as eating out was nearly half the price it’s in Finland and even though at first the drinks seemed to be only a bit cheaper all the drinks I had (cost 5-6€) would have cost up to 10€ if not more! :) But you have the 1 and 2 cents I could never get rid of and your Post Offices seem to be REALLY strict about the thickness of the envelope and everything! A letter that I would have sent from Finland with 1,3€ (up to 50g and 3cm thick) to Germany (or other European countries) was sent to me and based on the stamps it cost 3,45€ :S And it wasn’t even 50g! :/

Nope, no Pickwick tea in Germany, France or Finland (or so I’ve heard) but apparently those are available (at least) from the Baltic and Benelux Countries, Poland and Hungary (and yet mum and dad didn’t bring any with them -__-).. It’s a shame since the teas are amazing! I should start smuggling those to Finland from Netherlands or Belgium ;D And I’ve heard that even the Arizona ice tea is REALLY cheap in Netherlands while the 0,5 l bottle costs 2,5-3€ in here a bigger one costs less than 2€ in there ;;__;; Why is life so unfair?

      Delete
    9. I checked Suomikauppa and I was shocked at how overpriced everything is!! X__x Even if it is for “Finns who live abroad”, I bet they could get nearly everything cheaper if they’d just ask their relatives/friends back in Finland to buy and send those to them and they’d pay back X__x I only checked the Angry Birds and the products with no postages but still! EXPENSIVE!! X__x I think I wouldn’t order from there even if I’d live abroad.. :S And even the fact that they ask 8€ for 1,2-1,3€ postage and max. 2€ envelope :( Finnish prices....

You’ve ordered even Finnish books? I’ve stopped purchasing those because of the really high prices! You can get an English paperback for 13-15€ (most classics for 3-5€) while in Finnish those are from 20 to 30€!! X__x way too expensive to students, especially when from Amazon.co.uk I can get some for 5-6€!! It’s such a shame that stores disappear because of the lack of customers but it is because of the high prices.. :( And I don’t think I’ve bought any Finnish CDs after Stella’s last proper album back in.. 2011 :)

      Delete
    10. Yeah...the things at suomikauppa are really expensive...:( But the magazines they sell, I don't really have any chance to get them elsewhere...unless some friends send them to me...
So I just ordered some mags from them...and those 8 euros for shipping are the cheapest (!) option for shipping...the highest shipping for 1 Aku Ankka mag is almost 40 euros...
      Itella EMS
      Germany, 0.2 kg 39,16€
No way I'm going to pay that much for shipping of a mag that costs like 3 euros, lol.
I wonder how many people actually use suomikauppa, but it seems people use it, otherwise they'd long have stopped their online store...

Yeah, maybe I wouldn't buy Finnish books either if I were Finnish...you don't need to learn the language anymore, lol.
English paperbacks are really cheap...I gotta be careful I don't order too much of those, cause they're "only" like 5 or 6 euros, lol.
But with English books I can easily get them from the library if they have them...cause it doesn't take me long to read them, so I don't have problems with finishing them in time...
But with Finnish books I've got no choice but to buy them...cause I write into them, lol (and library wouldn't be happy about that) and also because it takes me lots of time...:(

I think I have at least a box or two of CDs with Finnish music by now, lol...so much new music (for me) to discover still...(one box having space for like 50 CDs, depending on how big the CD is...)

And today (as I feared) I waited in vain for mail again :(
Maybe on monday I'll get a bigger amount of mail then..hopefully...I finally want to have those things I'm waiting for...but I'll see...they should bring mail on monday after not having brought any today...(well by now it's yesterday...lol)

      (tomorrow I'll write more..now I'm kinda tired...)

      Delete
    11. Yeah...luckily the long message went through :) I hate it when writing a long message and then before sending it, it gets lost...
Especially when writing in another language...like once I had to rewrite a message in Finnish...that took me quite some time..lol.

Yeah..it really sucks...I wouldn't like it if normal mail wouldn't be used anymore...I like getting cards and letters...but some people are like "why should I wait days or weeks for a letter when I can get an e-mail instantly?"
But getting a letter is just different from getting an e-mail...
Yeah..that's true..there are more expensive hobbies than penpalling/postcrossing..but still, it does add up when you send lots of cards...or letters.

Sometimes you'd think that the way the prices rise, salaries should rise too..but that doesn't happen...
Maybe some people really don't care how much postage they pay...or maybe they'll only notice how much it costs when it actually goes up. Right now it's easy to say that the raise in postage doesn't matter, but maybe later they'll notice how much difference it actually makes..but dunno...

Yeah..maybe in Finland they have hired enough employees to distribute the mail...or they are done faster since there may be less people living in villages or so...
Most of the times we get mail at least every second day..but there were times when we went several days without mail...but that rarely happens. At that time where that happened once, when we went without mail for some days, we were told that a new person was supposed to start and she got sick on the first day...
I have the feeling that recently it's been getting more, that there are more days without mail...but maybe it's just cause I've been waiting for letters or things I ordered...so maybe I just notice it more, dunno. If there is nothing you wait for, then it doesn't matter that much if no mail comes...Yeah..that's what happens here too..lol..when there is no mail on saturday, then we often get lots of stuff on monday...like today :)

I think in Germany the things are cheaper because there is a high competition going on...Each store wants to be better and cheaper than the other, so they constantly try to offer the best stuff at the lowest possible price...
Which kinda means that products that aren't that much in demand quickly disappear from stores..since there are many big chains, and they only sell the products where there is the most demand for. We often see it happen in big supermarket chains that customer come and ask for a certain product and then get told that the boss of that chain decided that the product didn't sell well enough and they took it off...
Some stores even went bankrupt...many stores in the last years actually..you keep hearing about stores going bankrupt. There was one store that sold CDs and DVDs, and it also had imported CDs that no other store had, so I often went there to buy CDs from other countries or so. And then some big chain bought that store and those imported CDs disappeared (probably due to lack of demand), and then after a while the store had to close...so now there is no such store anymore...
Not sure if that is in Finland like that too...or not....

Yeah, our post offices are really strict...the envelope shouldn't be too huge, too dark, it can't be square or it costs extra postage, etc... Once some post employee told me that if the envelope has a dark color, then it makes it harder to read the addy, so you shouldn't send dark envelopes...
Looked at the post office website and yeah..it says that a letter that is 3cm thick costs 3.45 euros...
Such a thick letter no longer counts a standard letter...I guess..it's already a small package here, and you can send up to 500 g for a postage of 3,45...
So with that postage you could even include a CD or a small book in the package...not just a letter...

Hmm...apparently there is a limit of how much I can write...lol...4000 characters or something...:P so another message will follow ..lol

    12. Yeah..sometimes things are cheaper in other countries..or only available there. Some chocolate I tried when I was in Spain, I really loved it...but here I can't find anything similar to that..I've tried different types of chocolate here, but none was like the one I ate in Spain.
Same for some candy I found there...some hard candy, it isn't available here either.
And from Finland...I really fell in love with that filled liquorice they sell in Finland...can't get that here either :( Only once per year, when the Finnish christmas village comes to Germany...they sell it there... the one they sell at that Christmas village is called Suku Laku täytelakritsi and then I got some Fazer lakritsi from a friend (the one that has the Moomins or Angry Birds on them..)
